In the Convent of Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi in Florence, Pietro Perugino painted a lesser-known fresco of the Crucifixion that spans an entire wall. Divided into three sections by ceiling vaults and painted architectural arch elements, the composition features a luminous and transparent landscape, bathed by the gentle Umbrian daylight that gradually fades. Despite the dramatic nature of the scene, its grave serenity leaves no room for pathos. The six depicted figures appear almost indifferent — the suffering has ended, the sun is setting, and the cicadas are starting to sing.
